Kid's Book Fair for San Quentin Residents
One of our most popular programs is a family literacy event we host twice a year. We provide brand new free kids books for residents to come and pick out to send to their kids, grand kids, or other loved ones.

Family Connections

Staying connected to family is challenging while incarcerated. Sending gifts to your family is nearly impossible. The kid's book fair aims to allow residents the opportunity to send the gift of books to their family and share the gift of reading.

We host the book fair twice a year, once at the beginning of June for summer reading support, and once at the beginning of December for the holidays.

Love of Reading
Community members join us at the book fair to help residents pick out books for their loved ones. We work with children's librarians, literacy support librarians, teachers, and bookstore workers to make this event accessible and navigable. We want to foster a love of books and reading!

Gift Packages
Residents can pick out up to 3 books to send to family. We provide shipping services and also add fun stickers to the packages and provide cards for residents to write notes to their loved ones. On average, we send about 300 packages of books out at each book fair. That's a total of about 900 books sent every 6 months!
Bookstore Partners and You
We work with local bookstores to provide everything from baby board books, to early readers, middle grade readers, teen books, Spanish language books, and BIPOC books. We find that science books, activity books, and oversized gift books are the most popular selections. We also rely on your support to buy supplemental books that we know move fast at the book fairs. Individual support also covers the cost of shipping and materials. Thank you!!!
